The Lorain Lighthouse “The Jewel of the Port” has joined the United States Lighthouse Society's Lighthouse Passport Club.

Two different stamps are available. One for persons touring the Lighthouse in person and one for those viewing it from the shore.

The stamp will be applied to the official Lighthouse Passport book available at both locations for the cost of $14. For those already owning the passport, a donation is appreciated for the restoration program of the Jewel of the Port.

The Port Authority office, 319 Black River Lane, Lorain, OH 44052 has the stamp & passports for those viewing the lighthouse from shore. Their hours are 8:30am to 4:30pm Monday – Friday.

The U.S. Lighthouse Society has a reward program for those filling their passport with different lighthouses participating in their program. The various locations can be found at www.uslhs.org.

The stamps were designed by two Lorain County Community College students, Joyce Darmstadt and Andrew Black.

The 2015 Tour Dates Are Scheduled!

“After 48 years, We’re very pleased to have the lens returned to Lorain where it belongs,” says foundation chairman, Steven Luca, “especially since the 100th anniversary of the Jewel of the Port ® will take place in 2017.”

The lens, which was installed at the lighthouse in 1932, was dismantled in 1966 and used in an upper New York lighthouse. Working with the United States Coast Guard, the Port of Lorain Foundation, Inc. has secured a lease that will allow the lens to be displayed at The Lorain Port Authority offices located along Lorain’s Black River.

A brief history of the current lighthouse structure includes:

  • 1917: Structure is built

  • 1965: Lighthouse was decommissioned and slated for demolition,

  • 1977: Lorain County Historical Society took possession of the deed,

  • 1990: Port of Lorain Foundation, Inc. receives the deed for $1.00,

  • 2014: Fresnel Lens Returns to Lorain, Ohio.

A major restoration of the Lorain lighthouse is ongoing and is expected to be completed in 2014. A more detailed history of the lighthouse can be found at
